Deep understanding of the market, identifying the opportunity and deploying the right strategy at the right time is the key factor.  Fund managers often deploy sophisticated strategies based on various parameters, where both the profit and loss are predetermined and a good loss to profit ratio is maintained, usually 1:2 to 1:3. The profit ratio goes as high as 4 to 5 times the risk in a good market conditions. Hence the probability of profit is always high and defined. They further make adjustments to mitigate the loss. 

It's not as easy as it sounds though. Only 1% traders make more than a FD return. SEBI report says 9 out of 10 trades make losses in F&O trades.
